We’ve had great mobile phones with OK cameras for some time now. My iPhone 4S takes pretty decent shots.
Now you can buy a great camera with a decent “almost-phone.” Nikon just introduced the Coolpix S800C, powered by the Android smartphone OS. It has everything a smartphone has – minus the phone part. So if you’re near wi-fi, you’re one giant leap closer to sharing really nice photos with friends. Transferring your shots to your laptop & other devices may be less of a chore. And less friction transferring your photos means more enjoyment for you, your friends & family. Of course popping your shots up onto Facebook, Flickr & others should be a snap.
Besides, the camera has respectable, competitive stats & features even without the cool, capable OS.
Apple has always wanted to control everything about your experience. This has included building all the products that use their OS – no licensing. This also means that, in the absence of competition, they reap huge profit rewards, and you pay higher prices than you might with some competitors.
Will be interesting to see if & how they respond to this new Nikon. We’ve always wondered if Apple would try to revolutionize the photography experience with some sort of “primarily a camera” Apple device. Will this be the trigger?
